Track 1:  Start-Ups 101
Murrow Room

 Instructor:
  • Jason D. CrainManaging Associate, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP

Seven in 10 high tech start-ups fail.  While this session won't guarantee that your company will be the next Google, it will give it a better chance of being among the three start-ups that succeed.  At this session, you’ll learn the fundamental points on how to set-up and run a technology-based start-up.  Subjects include entity selection and formation, protecting intellectual property, dealing with employees and consultants, finding and negotiating with investors, evaluating funding options and maintaining good relations with your Board of Directors.  Jason Crain represents high-tech entrepreneurs and their companies and investors in Silicon Valley.  He’s experienced in recognizing the structures, practices and traits that separate liquidity from liquidation.

Track 2: Obtaining Federal Research Funding
Holeman Lounge

Instructor:
  • Dr. Douglas Maughan, Division Director, Cyber Security Division, Science and Technology Directorate. Department of Homeland Security

The Federal government is actively seeking to fund research and development of critical security technologies.   Grants are available from several different agencies, but each has different application requirements. Finding the right match is crucial.  Dr. Maughan will discuss the results that have occurred since the roll out of the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative, to include Research & Development results. This workshop will help you determine whether you can get funding for your product development and the most likely sources to contact.

2:05pm – 3:05pm   Workshops – Session Two

Track 1: The Financing Pitch - Raising Capital in a Down Market, What Works What Does Not. How to build a ten-point plan…
Murrow Room

Instructor:
  • Bob Ackerman, Founder and Managing Director, Allegis Capital

It’s difficult to raise money from venture capitalists today. In fact, experts say it’s the most difficult fundraising market in the last 50 years. But start-ups can get funded, if they are focused on solving major market problems, can articulate a viable plan and have a team that inspires confidence in investors. Bob Ackerman, founder and early stage investor from Allegis Capital, will tackle the topic and discuss how to select prospective investors, prepare the key elements of a great presentation and how to follow-up through to the closing of a round of financing. Bob Ackerman will give a list of “Dos and Don’ts” for the entrepreneur who is hoping to land the first round of venture capital.

Track 2: How to Make the Most of Your 30 Minutes
Holeman Lounge

Moderator:
  • Randy V. Sabett, Partner, SNR Denton
Panelists:
  • Kenneth D. Rogers, Director, Enterprise Architecture & Planning, IRM/BPC/EAP, U.S. Department of State
  • John South, CSO, Heartland Payment Systems

After finally obtaining an opportunity to speak to the head of the security operation, how do you make the most of the 30 minutes that you will have in front of that person?  Each individual that you may speak with has a different level of understanding about your company and the security threat that you are addressing.  How do you balance the need to educate on the threat and yet not come across as using the FUD factor (fear, uncertainty and doubt) to build support for your proposal?

In this talk, the speakers will address how a vendor team can make the most of their initial time in front of the security professionals to whom they are promoting their solutions; most importantly, how does one deliver the message and effectively promote the value proposition important to the CISOs and Risk Managers.  They will relate which approaches have worked well with them in the past and which have worked poorly.

For private technology companies in general and IT security companies in particular, by far the most likely path to shareholder liquidity is through acquisition.  An understanding of the fundamental trends driving this is critical to preparing for this likely outcome and maximizing the result.  Paul DiNardo will review these trends, as well as what companies can do to prepare.

Some of the expected issues include:
  1. When to go alone vs. partner?
  2. Are you ready to partner?
  3. How to judge a potential partner?
