"Bridging the Gaps" in Our Nation's Cyber Security: Connecting Leadership, Policy and Innovation
On June 25, the Security Innovation Network hosted over 300 people at the National Press Club, featuring opening and closing remarks and three panel discussions, each focusing on a different but related dimension of cyber security. Select slides from each of the panel presentation can be found below.

Keynote: Mike McConnell

Admiral (Ret.) Michael McConnell, Sr. Vice President, Booz, Allen, Hamilton & Former Director of National Intelligence

Panel 1: The Situation

Report From the Front Lines - a Non-'Beltway' Perspective

A panel moderated by the National Security Agency (NSA). Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) from some of the largest corporate targets including Intuit, eBay and Heartland Payment Systems shared their concerns and challenges on the cyber threats confronting their organizations, how they're fighting them, and what is needed to gain the asymmetrical advantage over cyber adversaries. They addressed the opportunities and challenges in working with and sharing information with the Federal Government and offered their perspective on the importance of advancing innovation into our nation's critical infrastructures.

The Innovation Crisis in America-Implications for Cyber Security

The global financial crisis has exacerbated long-term negative trends undermining the foundations of America's economic growth engine. Declining spending on basic research by the U.S. Government and universities, reduced corporate R&D expenditures, and systemic risks to the integrity of the venture capital growth engine are converging to undermine the development of cutting edge future solutions needed to protect our country's cyber security. This perspective from two venture capitalists, a leading academic, and a successful security entrepreneur highlighted the interdependence of these communities and the implications to our country's prospects for sustainable economic growth, new job creation, and national security.

Advancing Innovation through Collaboration - Bridging the Gap Between the Entrepreneurs and Government

Without waiting for a perfect, all-or-nothing approach to cyber security, reasonable and achievable steps can be taken in the near term to accelerate the introduction of innovative technologies into our government and industry IT operating systems. Speakers included a private industry CEO and serial entrepreneur; former second in command for DoD acquisition and procurement; and a retired General and executive at a leading government systems integrator, addressed the vital role of innovation and (the need for) progressive policy initiatives for improving collaboration between the government, research, entrepreneurial, and venture capital communities.

Recommendations at the strategic and micro level were made for removing long-standing acquisition and procurement barriers, and creating mechanisms to enhance the awareness and rapid identification of emerging offensive and defensive cyber capabilities. Steps for stimulating innovation and creating partnerships amongst industry and government agencies such as NSA, DHS, DOD, NSF, and DARPA, were outlined, which would help support those entrepreneurs who are creating best-of-class solutions to solve the most urgent cyber threats.
